The Irish Sports Council was established in 1999 to plan and co-ordinate the development of sport in Ireland. The Council distributes funds through the Vocational Educational Committee to promote sporting opportunities for young people, particularly those in areas of social and economic disadvantage.
A significant development in 1980 was the establishment of Sports Advisory Committees or Sports Advisory Bodies under the aegis of Vocational Education Committees. COSPOIR, the National Sports Council, had been established by the Government to carry out its Sport for All programme and needed a local steering committee to implement policy and to arrange and promote events all over the country.
Our VEC Sports Advisory Committee has been very active since its foundation. Every year a Superstars Competition is organised, with clubs throughout the county participating in a range of events. Each club should apply for financial subvention under one of the following four headings: |
