Lanesboro Vocational School opened in 1960
and amalgamated with St Josephs Convent
into a Community College in September 1989.
The Minister for Education and Science, Micháel
Martin, officially opened the new extension
in January 2000. Plans for refurbishment of
the original building are presently with the
Department.
The school offers the full range of subjects
to Higher Leaving Certificate Level and has
expanded into the PLC area with courses available
in Computers (ECDL), Horsemanship and Outdoor
Recreation.
Present school accommodation includes specialist
rooms which cater for Science, Home Economics,
Material Technology (wood), Construction Studies,
Material Technology (metal), Engineering and
Computer Studies. There is also an assembly
hall, general classrooms, a library, a staff
room, parents room, offices, playing
fields / running track, etc.
On completion of their leaving certificate
our students attend Universities, Institutes
of Technology, Colleges of Further Education,
take appreenticeships, or enter directly into
the workforce. |

The following outlines the curriculum provision
offered in Ballymahon Vocational School at
Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle. |
- Junior Cycle:
Subjects offered include: English, Irish,
Maths, French, German, History, Geography,
Science, Business Studies, Home Economics,
Art, Woodwork, Technical Graphics, Metalwork,
Religion, CSPE, SPHE, Music. (Since many
subjects now involve the use of computers
all students are thoroughly familiarised
in their use.)
- Senior Cycle:
Traditional Leaving Certificate subjects:
English, Irish, Maths, French, German,
Geography, History, Business Studies,
Home Economics, Art, Construction Studies,
Engineering, Technical Drawing, Physics,
Chemistry, Biology, Religion, Accountancy,
Career Guidance.

Additional Information
Pastoral Care / Religious
Education
As a VEC school, Lanesboro Community College
is multi-denominational. The Chaplain organises
activities such as 3rd World Projects, Retreats,
Prayer Services at Assembly and Youth Masses.
We offer Social, Personal and Health Education
up to Junior Certificate and we take part
in the Healthy Schools Initiative and Green
Schools Initiative.
Supervised Study
Four evenings per week, 2 hours per evening.
Study Skills Programme with 4th, 5th years
and parents.
Learning Support
Full guidance and counselling service. Resource
and Special Needs teachers, parents
information nights, Home School Community
Liaison, classes for parents and support for
parents in working with their child.

We distribute the Book Grant in October each
year and we are working on developing a second-hand
book scheme.
Extra Curricular Activities
Sport
Gaelic Football / Soccer U14, U16,
U18, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball,
Hurling. Last year was one of our most successful
years in sport. We reached the final stages
in all grades of Gaelic football in Leinster.
Workshops
Drama / Dance, Music, Art Exhibition, Community
Art Enterprise Programme.
Credit Union
The school operates a branch of the local
Credit Union in-house. This is a great opportunity
for students to save for educational trips,
tours, etc. The local branch also kindly sponsors
table quiz competitions every year. It also
sponsors a local Art competiton for different
age groups.

every year and highly commended in 2004. School

Educational Tours
A Continental tour is organised every two
years. Ongoing trips to theatre, musicals,
pantomimes, etc. Senior students also attend
Careers Exhibitions and visit Third
Level Institutions.

Cinderella 2000, Grease 2001, Show Time 2002,
Christmas Concert with Guests 2003.
