Additional Information
Pastoral / Religion
It is a central feature of school policy to
cater for the moral, psychological, social
and emotional needs of all the students. This
is administered in the context of a network
of Year-Heads who take special responsibility
for the personal welfare of student under
their care, as a group and on an individual
basis. This work is underpinned by the teachers
of Religion, in terms of the moral and spiritual
aspects of their work in the classroom, and
their one-to-one contact as appropriate.
Supervised Study
There is organised study each evening from
Monday to Thursday supervised by members of
the teaching staff on a rota basis. This service
is funded from the School Services Support
Fund allocation, augmented by a ¤30.00
per annum student contribution. The facility
to date has been availed of mainly by Junior
and Leaving Certificate students.
Learning Support
The Special Education department, staffed
by a qualified Remedial teacher and a qualified
Resource teacher, provides a specialist service
for students with learning difficulties, in
conjunction with the Department of Education
& Science Educational Psychologist. The
work is augmented by the services of the Guidance
teacher, if required.

Parent / Teacher Meetings
Parent / Teacher Meetings are organised 3
times annually to provide an opportunity for
all parents to meet each individual teacher
to discuss students progress and facilitate
an exchange of views, in order to enhance
the quality of the relationship between teacher
and student, towards a more effective and
meaningful educational experience.
School Uniform
Students are obliged to wear the complete
school uniform at all times within the school
and outside, when participating in any activity
associated with the school. Failure to do
so is regarded as a breach of school discipline.
Book Grant Scheme
In cases of exceptional hardship, limited
financial assistance is available to students
from the Book Grant Scheme.
Part-time Courses
Night courses in computers, salsa dancing,
etc., are provided, depending on demand.
Extra Curricular Activities
Sport
Sport is an integral part of school life.
Students are encouraged to participate as
part of their leisure education and social
development. New sports are encouraged both
indoor and outdoor, and a healthy attitude
to sport is inculcated in students. The range
of games played includes Athletics, Badminton,
Basketball, Gaelic football, Hurling, Indoor
football, Rugby, Soccer and Table-tennis.
In all cases, internal competitions / leagues
are organised, and in most instances, school
teams participate in external competitions,
as appropriate.
Cultural Activities
Irish language and culture occupy a central
role in the life of the school. Selected areas
of school routine and administration are conducted
through the medium of Irish and "Seachtain
na Gaeilge" is appropriately acknowledged
each year. Two scholarships to a Coláiste
Gaeilge are awarded annually, affording the
successful candidates a 4-week stay in a Gaeltacht
area. Similar French language scholarships
are offered in conjunction with Euro Languages
Colleges with a view to promoting a European
identity and cultural awareness among students.
Educational Trips
Outings are organised periodically to locations
of educational significance as an extension
to classroom activities in most subject areas,
for the purpose of establishing / reinforcing
the relevance of the curriculum and stimulating
interest in the syllabus. This year, educational
outings took place to the National Museum
in Dublin, to the FÁS Recruitment Exhibition
and to a Careers Exhibition in the RDS in
Dublin.
TOP
School Tours
Extended school tours, while not a regular
feature of the curriculum, occur on an ad
hoc basis, depending on the given circumstances
from year to year.
Home Garden Scheme
The school has a long tradition in the area
of rural science and every encouragement is
given to students to establish and maintain
a garden. Each spring they are supplied with
a range of vegetable seeds. Teachers monitor
and inspect the garden and prizes are awarded
for the best efforts.
Involvement with Community / Local industry
Since a number of school courses require students
to engage in work experience, local employers
play a major role in the delivery of these
programmes. All Post Leaving Cert and Leaving
Cert Applied students are provided for, in
this respect, within the community and a high
degree of interaction and co-operation exists
between the school and local industry and
local voluntary organisations to the benefit
of all concerned.
Awards Ceremonies
At the end of each academic year there is
a presentation of prizes for distinction gained
in the areas of scholarship, sport and personal
achievements. The annual presentation of awards
to Post Leaving Cert students is a major event
locally and is normally graced by the presence
of a prominent national figure.
Green Schools Projects
In 2004 Ardscoil Phadraig started the Green
Schools Peojects. Our aim is to have a litter-free
school and to achieve the Green Flag |
