The Back to Education Initiative was introduced
by the Department of Education and Science
in May 2002 with the aim of providing flexible,
innovative, part-time learning opportunities
across adult education programmes.
B.T.E.I. aims to enable people to return to
education. B.T.E.I. also aims to provide education
and training so that people in employment
can attend part-time courses and gain extra
qualifications. It also aims to address the
skills needs of the unemployed and those not
in the labour market and to afford an opportunity
to those in the workforce to upgrade their
skills in line with emerging needs.
In response to an increasing demand for courses
which enable people combine education and
training with the demands of work, family
and other responsibilities, the Adult Education
Service of Co Longford VEC is offering a wide
range of courses under the Back to Education
Initiative.
Courses on offer include communications, childcare,
computers, business, arts and crafts, woodwork,
personal effectiveness, food and nutrition,
ESOL and ECDL. Junior and Leaving Certificate
subjects will also be offered.
All programmes offer access to national certification
although it is not compulsory for all participants
to avail of it.
Part-time courses will take place in Longford,
Granard, Ballymahon, Lanesboro and other venues
where there is a demand. Learners can enrol
for one or more subjects which will be offered
in the mornings, afternoons and evenings to
meet demand.
Courses are FREE to persons entitled to (or
dependants of persons entitled to) a medical
card, an unemployment payment, a means tested
welfare payment or a family income supplement
payment. Persons who are unwaged with less
than upper second level education will be
required to pay 30% of tuition fees.
